This image shows the northern part of constellation Monoceros, as well as the southern part of Gemini. The right side of the image belongs to Orion. The main stream of the Winter Milky Way runs diagonally through this picture from the top right to the bottom left corner.
The no doubt most conspicuous object in this picture is the red Rosette Nebula NGC 2237-46 just below the image's center. This well-known nebula is a large, circular HII region containing a cluster of stars. Above the Rosette nebula, another, much fainter HII region is visible: It contains NGC 2264, the Cone Nebula, and surrounding nebulosity. At its left edge the Christmas Tree Cluster is barely recognizable. The blue patch to its right is NGC 2245, a reflection nebula. Near the top right corner yet another red emission nebula is visible: Sh2-261 in northern Orion.
The brightest star in this image visible near the upper edge is γ Geminorum.
