NGC 4565 - Needle Galaxy

NGC 4565

NGC 4565 is viewed edge-on from Earth. Also known as the Needle Galaxy for its narrow profile, NGC 4565 is located in the constellation Coma Berenices. This image reveals the galaxy's bulging central core cut by obscuring dust lanes. An assortment of background galaxies is included in the field of view, with neighboring galaxy NGC 4562 at the upper left. NGC 4565 itself lies about 30 to 50 million light-years distant and spans some 100,000 light-years. The 10th magnitude galaxy stands perpendicular to our own Milky Way galaxy and is located almost directly above the North Galactic Pole. It was first spotted in 1785 by Sir William Herschel.
