Sh2-82 and Surrounding Area

Sh2-82, Vulpecula, Sagitta, Aquila

Move your mouse over the image above (on smartphones or tablets: touch it) to get a version with constellation lines, deep-sky objects and labels drawn.

This Milky Way region had been split into the constellations Vulpecula (on top), Sagitta (at the center) and Aquila (at the bottom). It is full of faint brownish stars which form the background and which are partly obscured by dark nebulae. Brighter, colorful stars and star clusters form the foreground.

Sharpless 82 (Sh2-82) is the designation of a small emission and reflection nebula in Sagitta, which appears as small red glow around a star in image's center. Located about 2 degrees north is the so-called "Coathanger" asterism Collinder 399 located. Other bright nebulae in this region are NGC 6820, vdB 126, vdB 125 and Sh2-79. NGC 6793 and NGC 6802 are open star clusters while all LDN objects are dark nebulae.
