LBN 242 and Surrounding Nebulosity, Western Cygnus

LBN 242

Move your mouse over the image above (on smartphones or tablets: touch it) to get a version with constellation lines, deep-sky objects and labels drawn.

This region of Cygnus west of Deneb (α Cyg) and Sadr (γ Cyg) is part of the Milky Way and filled with stars and large emission nebulae. Most of the nebulae are designated either LBN (for Lynds' catalog of Bright Nebulae) or LDN (for Lynds' catalog of Dark Nebulae) and are really faint, but there are also some brighter deep-sky objects as well, like the open star cluster IC 1311 and NGC 6866, the emssion nebula NGC 6888 (the Crescent Nebula) and the dark nebulae Barnard 342 and 343 (most of them located towards the lower left edge).
